Over the last 5 years I have taught in over a dozen schools throughout Wigtownshire for pupils of all ages.

Bookings are being taken now for schools wishing to offer yoga to pupils or staff during the next academic year.

Secondary School

Sample letters - from pupils at a local Secondary School after two taster sessions.

I have not put who they are from to protect their identities.

What the boys said;

'Thank you for the two taster sessions of yoga. It was interesting and definitely not what I expected. I expected to be putting my feet behind my head. I enjoyed resting on the floor the best. When I stood up I felt very refreshed and felt I had just woken from a good nights sleep. Thank you once again.'

'I am writing to say I liked the yoga. I liked the relaxation and it relaxed all my muscles. The majority of the class would like to do it again. It took away all my stress and pains. I would like to do it again.'

'Thank you for giving us taster sessions in yoga as I enjoyed it very much. It was part of our Mental and Emotional Health and Well Being Programme. It felt very good when we were doing the relaxation techniques and it really made me feel more energised.'

What the girls said;

'Thank you very much for the yoga sessions that you gave our class. I really enjoyed the stuff you taught us. We did yoga as part of our stress and anxiety course in SVS. The relaxation techniques you taught us were very relaxing. I would like to do more yoga if I get the chance. It was much better than I expected. It would be good to get a yoga club because lots of people would go to it to get fit and to relax after school and it would be fun. Thank you again.'

'I really enjoyed the yoga; I found the relaxing techniques very effective. I found it very relaxing and I think it will help with any stress I may get. The more physical techniques I found fun and different. If I had the chance I would definitely take yoga. Thank you for giving us this experience.'

'I am writing to you about yoga. I am very pleased that you came again because I learned a lot but I want to learn more. The part I enjoyed most was the relaxation part because you nearly made me fall asleep and the parts were you had to stretch your legs and do all the bending was hard but I tried my hardest but it took away all my stress.'

'This letter is to thank you very much for your yoga lessons; it was not at all what I expected (better than I expected). The stretches were the best part and also the relaxing part I felt really relaxed!!'

Primary School

Sample letters - from older pupils at a local Primary School
after a course of 8 yoga classes.

What the boys said;

'In yoga I have learned to relax and to be calm. I really enjoy yoga but it is soar the next day when I get up. I think it is because the muscles have been working but now I can balance for longer but I enjoy yoga.'

'When I am at yoga I feel as if I can stretch further than I could when we first started yoga. After yoga I feel a lot calmer and I feel more awake. I feel I am building up muscels everywhere on my body.

I think yoga helps me unwind and loosen up. What I have learned from yoga is that you don't have to move a lot to exercise. I havealso learned about the different poses and branches of yoga. At the beginning I thought it would be boring but it wasn't.'

'Before I do yogo I feel tierd then after yogo I feel awake. Yogo is really fun and I do enjoy yogo and you would too.You can twist bend and do things you didn't think you can do.Yogo is fun and makes you feel better.'

What the girls said;

'Yoga helps you to relax.You come aware of your breathing,parts of your body and all around you.It helps you forget about your problems, I think it helps and if you get the chance go for it its great.It really gives you energy.'

'I think yoga is relaxing, calm and gentle its not like playing football. Yoga helps you with you body and the mind but sometimes it can hurt you legs and you tummy muscles. I am happy that primary seven are getting yoga because sometimes before yoga we are noisy and after we are quiet and also its fun when we do it with the music. Mr Glover even includes everyone he doesn't only chose some girls or boys he includes every one.'

'In yoga I feel calm and relaxed I can think straight and forget about my problems I really enjoy yoga I like it when we do balances and movements. The breathing is ok but it gets a bit boring sometimes.'

PLEASE NOTE: Text has been left as written by students - Spelling etc..

'I am writing to you in response to the two yoga sessions you took for our class about two weeks ago. They were very different to my expectations which were lots of hard body stretches and unbearable positions! But instead it was the most relaxing feeling I have ever felt. The part of the sessions where you had to be aware of each part of the body was so relaxing I almost fell asleep! I think it was a very kind and thoughtful thing for you to teach /show us. I also would point out that we should start yoga clubs for helping pupils relax with school stress. The programme of raising awareness, mental emotion, health/well being is a very good idea to make us pupils aware of the stress of ordinary school life and it is good that adults are realising that school pupils suffer from pressure of tests etc. not just adults.'
